How To - Installation Tutorials
One of the primary benefits of installing custom in-wall and in-ceiling speakers for your home audio system is their appearance and ability to match a room's decor and atmosphere. But this can be spoiled if you don't know how to properly paint your speaker's grille and outer diameter. Follow these simple instructions to paint your Musica speakers and leave your installation looking professional.
Painting Speakers
Step 1:
Install Speaker
The best time to paint your speaker is at the same time you paint the room itself. Begin by installing the speaker into the mounting location as usual but do not put on the grille yet.
Step 2:
Insert Paint Shield
All new model MTX custom speakers come with a paint shield. This custom molded piece of plastic fits tightly over the speaker like the grille normally would- however, instead of having holes for sound to pass through it is solid to protect the speaker cone, baffle, and internal parts from the paint.
Step 3:
Paint Outer Diameter*
Paint the room as normal including the outer diameter of the speaker. Coat it evenly with the same layering as the wall itself. Spray or roller painting should yield excellent results.
*NOTE: Image shown above has a paint shield covering the speaker. If you are using an older model speaker that doesn't come with a paint shield you can use a piece of cardboard, plastic, or anything else cut into the shape of the speaker. Be particularly careful that you use painters tape to seal the edges to protect from paint getting where it's not suppose to be.
Step 4:
Remove Grille Backing
To paint the grille first remove the cloth insert from the inside of the grille. This felt backing is used for aesthetic reasons to give an opaque appearance. Depending on the color the speaker is being painted, it might have a better appearance with or without it placed back in the grille after it has been painted.
Step 5:
Paint Grille
To paint the grille it is recommended to use a spray paint gun as it is less likely to fill the holes. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and coat with the same number of layers as the rest of the room to ensure proper color match. Using a paint roller may result in more excess paint and more difficulty clearing holes.
Step 6:
Clean Excess Paint
Make sure all of the holes on the grille are cleared from paint to maintain the transparent sound from the speaker. As the paint begins to dry, use a needle or other sharp point to clean out the coagulated paint from the grille.
Step 7:
Install Grille
After everything has completely dried, place the cloth insert back inside the grille, remove the paint shield from the speaker, and place the grille in the speaker. Enjoy.
